Abstract Abstract: The hepatoprotective effects of the ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) on alcohol-induced liver steatosis were investigated in Wistar rats. Chronic alcoholic fatty liver was induced by administration of 52% alcohol to male Wistar rats at the dose of 1% body weight for 7 weeks. Then animals were simultaneously treated with 50% ethanol solutions of EEP or normal saline at the dose of 0.1% body weight for 4 further weeks. Serological analyses and liver histopathology studies were performed to investigate the development of steatosis. Microarray analysis was conducted to investigate the alterations of hepatic gene expression profiling. Our results showed that 4-week treatment of EEP helped to restore the levels of various blood indices,...

Dietary lipid level, hepatic lipogenesis and flesh quality in turbot (Psetta maxima) ArchiMer
Regost, Christelle; Arzel, Jacqueline; Cardinal, Mireille; Robin, Jean; Laroche, M; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
A study was undertaken with marketable size turbot to evaluate the effects of dietary fat levels on chemical composition. lipogenesis and flesh quality, Four experimental diets containing graded levels of fish oil in order to obtain 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% of crude fat were fed to triplicate groups of turbot (initial body weight of 660 g) for 12 weeks in full strength seawater at temperature of 17 degreesC. Nutrient digestibility was not influenced by dietary fat levels. The best growth performance was observed in fish fed 10% and 15% dietary fat. High dietary lipid levels led to higher fat deposition in whole fish, although lipid level in muscle remained low (1.1% in dorsal muscle and 1.7% in ventral muscle irrespective of diet), Significant subcutaneous...

Differences in lipogenesis and lipolysis in obese and non-obese adult human adipocytes Biol. Res.
CIFUENTES,MARIANA; ALBALA,CECILIA; ROJAS,CECILIA V.
It has been proposed that differences in adipocyte function and/or metabolism between obese and lean individuáis may manifest themselves in functional adipose tissue abnormalities that lead to metabolic disorders in obesity. We studied lipogenesis and lipolysis of omental adipocytes from obese (OB) and non-obese (NOB) humans. The specific activity of the lipogenic marker enzyme G3PDH was 50% lower in total adipocytes of OB compared to that of NOB subjects. Omental adipocytes from OB subjects also had lower basal lipolytic levéis, and a lower lipolytic response to p-adrenergic stimulus. Cholesterol depletion of adipocyte plasma membrane using methyl β-cyclodextrin caused a lipolytic effect on adipocytes of both groups together, but when obese and...

Effect of ractopamine on lipid metabolism in vivo - a systematic review BABT
Ferreira,Matheus Soares da Silva; Garbossa,Cesar Augusto Pospissil; Oberlender,Guilherme; Pereira,Luciano José; Zangeronimo,Márcio Gilberto; Sousa,Raimundo Vicente de; Cantarelli,Vinícius de Souza.
The aim of this article was to evaluate the in vivo mechanism of action through which ractopamine reduces the amount of adipose tissue in carcass of animals fed diets supplemented with this drug. Literature search was carried out, using the keywords Ractopamine, lipogenesis, lipolysis, fatty acid and adipose tissue. The scoring system was designed for the adequacy of the methodology. A total of eight papers were found - all published in the English language. The determination of lipolysis and lipogenesis was carried out using different methods - from the quantification of non-esterified fatty acids in the blood to molecular analyses of adipose tissue. The review analysis suggested that, at least in the pigs, the use of this drug reduced lipid deposition in...

Effet du taux et de la nature des lipides alimentaires sur les mécanismes intervenant dans la constitution des dépôts lipidiques (transport, captage, synthèse) chez la truite arc-en-ciel et le bar ArchiMer
Richard, Nadège.
Replacement of dietary fish oil by a blend of vegetable oils for more than a year does not affect growth, hepatic lipogenesis and tissue lipid uptake in rainbow trout and European seabass. However, this replacement decreases plasma cholesterol level in both species and LDL amount in rainbow trout. Such replacement does not affect muscle lipid content of fish but modifies fatty acid composition of fish flesh which reflects in most part that of dietary lipid source. Increasing dietary lipid level inhibits hepatic lipogenesis but does not modify tissue lipid uptake in seabass and in two trout lines selected for muscle lipid level. In seabass, dietary lipid level had a lower impact on growth and lipid metabolism than rearing temperature. In this species,...

Fat gain with physical detraining is correlated with increased glucose transport and oxidation in periepididymal white adipose tissue in rats BJMBR
Sertié,R.A.L.; Andreotti,S.; Proença,A.R.G.; Campaña,A.B.; Lima,F.B..
As it is a common observation that obesity tends to occur after discontinuation of exercise, we investigated how white adipocytes isolated from the periepididymal fat of animals with interrupted physical training transport and oxidize glucose, and whether these adaptations support the weight regain seen after 4 weeks of physical detraining. Male Wistar rats (45 days old, weighing 200 g) were divided into two groups (n=10): group D (detrained), trained for 8 weeks and detrained for 4 weeks; and group S (sedentary). The physical exercise was carried out on a treadmill for 60 min/day, 5 days/week for 8 weeks, at 50-60% of the maximum running capacity. After the training protocol, adipocytes isolated from the periepididymal adipose tissue were submitted to...

New concepts in white adipose tissue physiology BJMBR
Proença,A.R.G.; Sertié,R.A.L.; Oliveira,A.C.; Campaãa,A.B.; Caminhotto,R.O.; Chimin,P.; Lima,F.B..
Numerous studies address the physiology of adipose tissue (AT). The interest surrounding the physiology of AT is primarily the result of the epidemic outburst of obesity in various contemporary societies. Briefly, the two primary metabolic activities of white AT include lipogenesis and lipolysis. Throughout the last two decades, a new model of AT physiology has emerged. Although AT was considered to be primarily an abundant energy source, it is currently considered to be a prolific producer of biologically active substances, and, consequently, is now recognized as an endocrine organ. In addition to leptin, other biologically active substances secreted by AT, generally classified as cytokines, include adiponectin, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha,...

Renin-angiotensin system blockers regulate the metabolism of isolated fat cells in vitro BJMBR
Caminhotto,R de O.; Sertié,R.A.L.; Andreotti,S.; Campaãa,A.B.; Lima,F.B..
Due to the presence of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in tissues and its specific influence on white adipose tissue, fat cells are possible targets of pharmacological RAS blockers commonly used as anti-hypertensive drugs. In the present study, we investigated the effects of different RAS blockers on fat cell metabolism, more specifically on lipolysis, lipogenesis and oxidation of energy substrates. Isolated primary adipocytes were incubated with different RAS blockers (aliskiren, captopril and losartan) in vitro for 24 h and lipolysis, lipogenesis and glucose oxidation capacities were determined in dose-response assays to a β-adrenergic agonist and to insulin. Although no change was found in lipolytic capacity, the RAS blockers modulated lipogenesis...

Total replacement of fish oil by soybean or linseed oil with a return to fish oil in turbot (Psetta maxima) - 1. Growth performance, flesh fatty acid profile, and lipid metabolism ArchiMer
Regost, Christelle; Arzel, Jacqueline; Robin, Jean; Rosenlund, Grethe; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
The aim of the study was to investigate the replacement of fish oil by vegetable oils and the effects of a washout with a return to fish oil on growth performances and lipid metabolism. three experimental fish meal-based isonitrogenous (crude protein content: 57.5%) and isolipidic (crude lipid content: 16.5%) diets were formulated containing either 9% of added fish oil (170), soybean oil (SO), or linseed oil (LO). Each diet was distributed to triplicate groups of 25 marketable size turbot (initial body weight of 579 g) grown in seawater at water temperature of 17 T. Fish were fed once a day to visual satiety. At the end of the growth trial, which lasted 13 weeks, all groups of turbot were fed with FO diet for 8 weeks. The growth of turbot was high, but the...
